Preventive Care: Flu Vaccines

ARTICLE SECTIONS

Preventive care helps individuals stay healthy and reduce the risk of serious illness.

The influenza (flu) vaccine is one of the most widely known preventive care services.

Influenza (flu) is a common seasonal illness and can contribute to medical visits, hospitalizations, and work absences. Flu vaccination may help reduce the likelihood of illness and related complications, as well as decrease healthcare utilization and severe outcomes in the population.

Flu Season and Vaccination Access

Flu season is generally considered to run from early fall through early spring, with peak activity typically occurring in mid-winter.

Coverage mandates are required under the Affordable Care Act for many vaccines, including the flu, but the way coverage is handled is at the plan’s discretion. A plan may cover under the medical benefit alone or under both the medical and pharmacy benefit.

Many people receive their flu vaccine from their local pharmacist, while others may need to rely on their doctor’s office for their shot. Some employers even arrange to bring someone in to administer the flu vaccine to their employees while at work.

Flu can result in significant seasonal illness and associated healthcare utilization. Increasing access to vaccination may support reduced illness burden and improved health outcomes.

Coverage under your National CooperativeRx pharmacy benefit can easily be added and may be more cost-effective than the medical benefit.

Please contact your National CooperativeRx Account Representative for more information regarding your plan’s vaccine coverage.
